The main conference

at the plenary meeting.

The main conference was held on July 29.
In the morning session, each country presented their country reports.
On behalf of the Japanese delegates, Ms. Ogiso Shigeko reported the current condition of nuclear power and anti-nuclear movement in Japan as follows. Many Asian countries are propagandizing that "Japan, one of the most earthquake prone country, is safely operating more than 50 nuclear power plants" to persuade their people to believe the safety myth of the nuclear power plants. But many troubles are occurring in the nuclear power plants in Japan, including serious troubles on the eve of meltdown. Especially, the accident at Monju, the fast breeding reactor was the most serious one compared to the accidents at other fast breeding reactors ever occurred in the world Besides, they are also propagandizing that Japanese people have accepted the nuclear power plants. But , in reality, majority of the people are rejecting nuclear power plant. There might be a few nuclear power plants to be increased inside the existing plants, however, it's already impossible to construct new nuclear power plants anymore.
As the result, the nuclear industry is aiming to Asian countries to survive. So not only the domestic problem, we also have to expand our movement to prevent the export of nuclear power to Asian countries as well.

Korean friends reported that the strong opposition from the residents is still preventing the government from constructing the controversial radioactive waste storage site in Korea. The long and strong struggle against the increase of fifth and sixth nuclear power plants in Yongwang was also reported.

Taiwan delegate described the anti-nuclear movement against the fourth nuclear power plant in Gong-Liau and reported that the Legislative Yuan, the parliament of Taiwan, had passed the resolution to abolish all the nuclear project in Taiwan on May 24 in 1996 (Later the resolution was vetoed and overturned on October ). On April, 1996, Taiwan government tried to bring the more waste into the Orchid Island, where the low level radioactive waste storage site is located, but Tao people, the indigenous people in the island strongly protested the shipment at the port. Finally the ship had to return to Taipei. Taiwan government constructed the waste storage site in The Orchid Island, the indigenous people's society . Clearly, it is based on the environmental discrimination and is the serious violation of their human rights.

From the report from the Philippines delegates we could know that the notorious Bataan nuclear power plant , which was build during the Marcos' reign but has never been operated, is determined to be converted into a thermal power plant.
But the government has the ambition to construct new nuclear power plants under the nationwide development plan called "Philippine 2000."

Ms. Junilyn reporting the current condition in the Philippines.

Indonesian representative claimed that the feasibility study of the planned nuclear power plant in Muria peninsula had been completed on June 1996. As the first nuclear bill in Indonesia has been presented to the House since the beginning of January in 1996, there is a possibility that the approval of the bill will accelerate the process to construct the first nuclear power plant, justifying the international tender.
